A kitten should be weaned at about 3-6 weeks of age. The mother cat will usually start discouraging nursing at about 4 weeks, and small amounts of canned kitten food, should be available several times a day, for about 30 minutes at a time. Separate the mother from the babies during feeding, to allow them to get used to being away from each other, and slowly extend the length of time they are apart. they feel thats the best age. however, in shelters, pet stores, adoption agencies and just about everywhere you can get them a lot younger. I'd go for 4 months because they are fully weaned and capable of basic self maintenance and such....and there's still plenty of kitten time left.
