Blood Python

The blood python is named for the blood red color on it's scales. After hatching out of an egg, blood python youngsters are not red yet. They are predominantly tan in color with a few black markings. They will get their full coloration at 2-3 years of age. It is commonly called the Sumatra blood python because it is found in Sumatra, Indonesa, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. The snake is very common and easy to find in the wild in those countries. They feed on mice, rabbits and smaller mammals they find in the field. An adult can grow to 5-7 feet in length, although some grow as long as 9 feet and they usually live 20 or more years if in captivity. When a blood python has babies, it usually has a clutch of 18-30 eggs. The blood python is a popular pet, but not recommended for just anyone. They are finicky eaters, and if they are not handled from birth on, they may be more aggressive and not easily tamed. http://www.a1pythons.com/blood.htm
