Characteristics of a Melancholy
Melancholy describes any of the symptoms associated with depression. Characteristics of a melancholy person include: fatigue, loss of interest in activities, withdrawal from family and friends, and body aches and pains. In ancient Greek times, the disease "melancholia" was first diagnosed. It came from the old medical theory of the "four humours," in which any disease could be explained by a imbalance of one of four fluids in the body. The word melancholia meant "black bile," and was diagnosed by Hippocrates as "fears or despondancies that last a long time."
