Desert Climate
A desert climate is an area that has less than 10 inches of rain annually. Traditional sandy desert of course falls into this grouping, but other areas that have little rainfall each year can be considered a desert climate as well. There are two categories of desert climates; hot desert climate and cold desert climate. Hot desert climates include the Sahara, Saudi Arabia, parts of Australia and the southwestern United States. Cold desert climates are much less common, but the Gobi desert in Mongolia would be an example of one. The north and south polar regions of the globe also receive very little rain each year but are normally considered to be polar climates, not deserts.
