Decomposition of a body is a continual process that can take anywhere from weeks to years. Bones have been found by archaeologists and carbon dated back to millions of years ago. Decomposition is accomplished by fungi and bacteria multiplying and using the body as food. Embalming slows this process greatly. The rate of decomposition does depend on the environment and the state of the body at the time of death. If the body is exposed to open air or in water it will decay in about one week's time. If it is buried underground then it will take about a month. Heat speeds up the decay and cold slows it down.
