How to Calculate Deciles

Deciles is defined as one of the values of a variable that divides the distribution of the variable into ten groups having equal frequencies. A school's decile indicates the extent to which the school draws its students from low socio-economic communities. A school's decile does not indicate the overall socio-economic mix of the school. There are five factors that determine the make up the socio-economic indicator: household income, occupation, household crowding, educational qualifications, and income support. Census information is used to calculate these factors for each meshblock. The five census factors are weighted by the number of students from each meshblock.

How to calculate deciles; If, for example, you had 40 years of annual rainfall records, you would first need to arrange the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest). Next split them into 10 equal groups, so that in this example there would be 10 groups of four.

Deciles are one of the statistics used to provide an indication of the spread of data in a data set (e.g.. a collection of rainfall observations at a site). To calculate deciles, we divide the ranked data set into ten parts. ... Climate normals can be used to assess how typical of the current climate a particular event was.
