No-see-ums are tiny mosquito-like insects which feed off the blood of humans, mammals and reptiles.1 No-see-ums are referred to by several names, including biting midges, sand fleas, punkies, jejenes, gnats and moose flies.2 While an occasional bite from a no-see-um may be considered a relative nuisance, multiple bites can cause serious illness or even death.3 These tiny insects can carry a disease called leishmaniasis.3
