Skinner's Reinforcement Theory
Skinner's reinforcement theory involves the tendancy of lab rats to continue to press bar for a food pellet, even when given an electrical shock. It was developed by Burrhus F. Skinner, a psychologist who studied at Harvard. His research led him to discover "programmed learning" using boxes he developed to conduct these experiments, now referred to as "Skinner's boxes." The main idea of this theory is that reinforcers, such as the food pellets, can control behavior. The rat would endure electrical shock in order to continue to receive their food.
