The process of mitosis is divided into 6 stages. The Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, and cytokinasis. At Interphase, there is only one cell, but after cytokinasis there are two identical cells.

; Mitosis: Labeled Diagram ... Mitosis is a process of cell division which results in the production of two daughter cells from a single parent cell. The daughter cells are identical to one another and to the original parent cell. ... In a typical animal cell, mitosis can be divided into four principals stages:

Despite the relative ease of observation of the physical stages of mitosis under the microscope (primarily because the chromosomes stain readily when in their coiled state), the exact chemical and kinetic nature of mitosis is not yet fully understood.

This page features a series of photographs of whitefish blastula cells in the various stages of mitosis. ... To begin mitosis, the nuclear membrane breaks down, while the chromosomes shorten and thicken (here, a chromosome is two chromatids, bound at a point called the centromere, making an "X" shape).

The process of mitosis can be easily visualized using traditional light microscopy. This is due to the fact that condensed chromosomes take up stains very strongly. Here we used a cultured epithelial cell line stained with immunofluorescent antibodies for actin and microtubules and a DNA-specific dye for chromosomes.

Mitosis is nuclear division plus cytokinesis, and produces two identical daughter cells during prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Interphase is often included in discussions of mitosis, but interphase is technically not part of mitosis, but rather encompasses stages G1, S, and G2 of the cell cycle.
