Types of Rain

Rain is a kind of precipitation with varying types. Relief rain usually happens along coastal areas. When the air temperature falls to its dew point, water vapor will condense to form clouds which, when full, the relief rain begins to fall. It is very dense and cold. Convectional rain is found in hot and wet places. When the temperature of the rising air falls to the dew point the water vapor shrinks into thick clouds and forms convection rain. Frontal rain is when a cold front meets a warm front. The less dense warm air rises and condenses forming the clouds that will get heavier and release rain. Lastly is the convectional rain which is when the water from the ground is evaporated. The water vapor rises, cools and condenses at dew point. Again, clouds form and the rain falls.

1. CONVECTIONAL RAINFALL Convectional rain is caused by convection where the surface layer of the atmosphere is heated causing the moisture laden air to rise. As it rises it cools to form clouds. The unequal heating of the earth’s surface causes convection.

Types of Rain ... There are supposedly three main types of rain - relief (orographic), convectional and frontal (cyclonic). Frontal rain occurs when warm air meets cold air, which is denser, and forces the warm air to rise.
