The rat is an omnivore and it's nutritional requirements are very similar to those of humans. The rat can eat seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, fruits, meats and invertebrates. Every 24 hours the rat consumes 1/3 of ots body weight. Rats are very hesitant to try try new foods because of their inability to vomit. This causes rats to nibble any new food source and wait to see if it causes them to be sick before they eat large quantities.
