Characteristics of Orientalism

o Orientalism refers to the imitation or depiction of aspects of Eastern cultures. The term Orientalism was used more in art history referring mostly to the works of French artists in the 19th century. Some modern scholars have used the term to refer to writers of the Imperialist era who had pro-Eastern attitudes. Orientalism has also come to mean the adoption of typical eastern motifs, styles and subject matter in art, architecture, and design. Some characteristics of Orientalism are inscrutability, religious extremism and being backward culturally, scientifically and in technology. That is not the opinion of all people. A couple of characteristics attributed to Orientalism are inscrutability, religious extremism and being backward culturally, scientifically and in technology. Orientalism has become negative in meaning when referring to Eastern cultures and societies.
