Maiden Name
A maiden name is the surname that is replaced with the married last name. For example, "Jane Ann Doe" marries John Smith. Jane's new name will be Jane Doe Smith. Doe is now Jane's maiden name because she took her husband's last name (Smith) when they were married. However, some women choose not to change their last names when they get married. One reason is because it may cause an awkward or embarrassing name combination. Another reason is that the woman may prefer her last name over her husband's last name.
