Statute of Limitations in Criminal Law

In criminal law there is a statute known as the statute of limitations that limits the maximum amount of time allowed to initiate a proceeding after certain criminal events occur. Under this statute, time begins when the event actually took place not when it was discovered that it took place and ends after a specified amount of time. However there are options available in some cases that would stop time from running out, for example tolling. Tolling is often permitted in cases where minors are involved or bankruptcies have been filed.
