Why Is Virginia Called a Commonwealth

Many have asked the question, "Why is Virginia called a commonwealth?" The answer to this questions starts with Virginia wanting to break free from their royal colony status. They chose to call themselves a commonwealth to represent the idea that they had a government based on the common consent of their citizens. Being a commonwealth was much more important then than it is now. Once a distinction, it is no longer recognized as such. Therefore, Virginia is generally recognized as a state.

What others are suggesting
Virginia is called a commonwealth because that was what our forefathers who founded Virginia in 1776 began calling it. There is no difference between the term "state" and "commonwealth".
