Unna Boot Application

An Unna boot is a special gauze bandage that is used for the treatment of venous stasis ulcers and other medical problems of the leg related to the vein. A creamy misture of zinc oxidde and calamine is often applied. It may contain other ingredients like glycerin, castor oil and white petroleum. It was named after Paul Gerson Unna. I see that this thread is on the application of Unna's boots. I also have a question about application. We just received an order to apply 10 layers of unna's boot! I have never heard of this and am wondering if this is in any way contraindicated.

Unna's boot is a fantastic tool for stasis ulcers only. It must be applied carefully and accurately. Weekly is sufficient unless exudate wets through the layers. Daily unna's boot changes is a waste of supplies. Our protocol is first change 2-3 days after application then weekly.
