I have seen now so many messages on the News-Groups, and also received so many messages on this topic, that I am putting it up now like this: on a 10base2 coax network-cable, there MUST be a 50 Ohm terminator on each end: one terminator MUST be grounded, the other NOT!

Another coax solution is to use 10base2 (cheapernet), which uses a DC level shift for collision detection. The official end-to-end maximum is 1000 meters which methink is rather conservative. The correct cable is 50 ohm RG-58/u.

Re: Why is my 100mbs LAN so slow? - forum topic ... This made me revisit 802.3 (in a great hurry, it's in excess of 1500 pages :) ). The 2.5m I had in mind definitely applies to 10Base5 cable. 10Base2 is spec'ed at 0.5m. This doesn't seem to apply to 10BaseT however:

So your maximum 10Base2 cable length using repeaters is 925 metres, ... The 10Base2 spec says the network "may" be grounded in one (and ONLY one) place, and doing this may reduce network errors. Grounding the network in more than one place WILL cause errors and may damage equipment thanks to potential differences...
