Kitasato, Shibasaburo (1852-1931), a Japanese bacteriologist, discovered the bacillus that causes bubonic plague and did important work on other diseases. Behring and Kitasato discovered that the presence of tetanus and diphtheria toxins in blood cause the blood to produce antitoxins that neutralize the poisonous substances.
