Enrique Krauze's Siglo de Caudillos, of course, is a pretty good popularized history, rather insightful on my points, but he falls back on the literary motif of the caudillo in a way that I ish he had avoided. He makes every 19th century leader a caudillo, which is overdoing it quite a bit.
