The most common abnormality of the umbilical cord is a single umbilical artery (SUA), which occurs in 0.5% to 2.5% of pregnancies.[1] This finding is sometimes referred to as a 2-vessel cord. The loss of 1 umbilical artery likely occurs secondary to thrombotic atrophy of a previously normal artery.

My baby only had a 2 vessel cord, instead of the normal 3 vessel cord. It's not uncommon, but because my baby didn't get as much oxygen and blood flow as 3 vessel umbilical cord babies, my doctor wanted to be extra careful that my baby wasn't to stressed out.

A. There are two ways that folks look at a 2 vessel cord (or a "single umbilical artery", "SUA"). The first is that, IF you have a baby with many obvious malformations, it is common for that child ALSO to have a SUA.
