Very generally speaking, the normal ratio in most species approximates 1:1. For example, high total protein with a normal A:G ratio suggests dehydration, while the same protein with a low A:G ratio would indicate hyperglobulinemia.

The liver can function adequately on 20% of liver tissue, thus early diagnosis by lab methods is difficult. A reversed A/G Ratio may be a helpful indicator.

Although albumin is made exclusively in the liver, globulins are produced in many sites throughout the body. Thus, whether total protein is normal, elevated, or low, a decrease in the A/G ratio often indicates the presence of impaired liver function.

Normally, there is a little more albumin than globulins, giving a normal A/G ratio of slightly over 1. Because disease states affect the relative changes in albumin and globulins in different ways, this may provide a clue to the physician as to the cause of the change in protein levels.

Hi Sam, The A/G ratio is associated with protein level. It is the ratio of albumin to globulins. Serum proteins are generally 50-60% albumin, and also include globulins, and other proteins. A normal A/G ratio is around 1.1 to 1.8. A ratio of 2.2 is not unusual with some health conditions.
