Abrasion is the type of mechanical weathering which is very common in the deserts. Abrasion means that the the surface of the rock is weathered due to the action of an abrasive agent, which removes the upper layer of the rock, by friction.

Abrasion - physical grinding of rock fragments. Here, the photo shows some pits that have been eroded into the rock by sandblasting. Along with the physical weathering (the sandblasting), chemical weathering has taken place as the rock shows some signs of solution weathering as well.

Information on mechanical and chemical weathering, and the effects it has. ... Mineral composition affects physical weathering. (abrasion) Harder rocks abrade less than softer rocks. Solid crystalline rocks will have fewer openings and therefore fewer places where the water can penetrate. An example is quartz.
