This tutorial is a very basic review of some basic physics and chemistry that plays a role in the generation and sustaining of the action potential. The goal of the tutorial is to give students some grasp of why the action potential acts as it does as opposed to simply a knowledge of what happens.

What will be included here will be a collection of tutorials on basic neural functions. Such tutorials should be appropriate for courses in biopsychology, introduction, and even sensation and perception. ... Review of Physical Factors Involved in the Action Potential. Uses animations. Lights, Camera, Action Potential ... The action potential is an explosion of electrical activity that is created by a depolarizing current. This means that some event (a stimulus) causes the resting potential to move toward 0 mV. When the depolarization reaches about -55 mV a neuron will fire an action potential.

One of the striking characteristics of the action potential is its all-or-none nature. That is, in most cases, you either don't get an action potential or you do, you never get half of an action potential, or a quarter of an action potential.

Another blogging hiatus on the old "Action Potential" blog. Sorry about that. However, the news is now that I have become a neuroscience editor for Nature, I will be taking my show on the road to a new site, and will be blogging on Nature Network.
