Air brakes should be adjusted in the shop with the wheels off the ground according to the manufacturer's instructions. But if your on the road and your looking at 6 miles of a 6% downgrade here is ... See how far the adjusting arm will move with air pressure (80 psi or above)or by manually turning the arm with a pry bar.

Heavy trucks use air brakes exclusively. Most of these are drum type units like the one shown above. Air enters the chamber when the brakes are applied, the push rod moves out turning the slack adjuster which rotates the "S" cam and forces the shoes into the drum.

You should contact a manufacturer of air brake components....like Rockwell, Gnite or Haldex and they are qualified and capable to address questions on air brakes.

One drawback to air brakes is brake lag, which is the time required for air to flow through the lines and force the engagement of the linings to the drum. Though the travel time is less than a second, air brakes do ... It also provides a means of adjusting clearance between brake shoes and drum to compensate for lining wear.

If possible, use shop air (discussed in the Note) to keep the brake system at full pressure. This eliminates the need to run the engine while adjusting the brakes.

9. To check the free play of manual slack adjusters on s-cam brakes you should: ; A Park on level ground, chock the wheels, and release the parking brakes. B Stop on level ground and apply the parking brakes. C Park on level ground and drain off air pressure before adjusting.
