I happen to fly a lot on business. For me, personally, airplanes are one of the most amazing things that I see on a daily basis. When I get on a 747, I am boarding a gigantic vehicle capable of carrying 500 or 600 people. A 747 weighs up ...

The lift produced by an airplane's wings is used to turn the airplane. When banked, the horizontal component of lift turns the airplane. Until a force acts on the airplane, it tends to fly straight ahead due to inertia. Inertia is the pheno...

After this, paper airplanes are really gliders, converting altitude to forward motion. Lift comes when the air below the airplane wing is pushing up harder than the air above it is pushing down. It is this difference in pressure that enables the plane to fly.

A lot of half-baked theories attempt to explain why airplanes fly. All try to take the mysterious world of aerodynamics and distill it into something comprehensible to the lay audience--not an easy task. Nearly all of the common "theories" are misleading at best, and usually flat-out wrong.

How does an airplane fly? Why is it that the air traveling over the top of the wing has to reach the end of it at the same time that the air traveling underneath the wing reaches it? ... This is a better explanation. For an object to go up, something has to push it up. A wing works by changing the direction of the air.

Some critics — like Greenpeace activists who breached Heathrow security Monday to protest the airport's proposed third runway — argue it makes more sense simply to fly less. Others argue there are bigger, more realistic environmental gains to be made by building more efficient airplanes.

Many believe that this explanation is incorrect because flat wings (such as seen on balsa wood airplanes, paper planes and others) also have managed to create lift. Please read How planes fly: the physical description of flight as well to get a fuller understanding of the creation of lift.
