The official state tree of Alabama is the Southern Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris Miller). Longleaf pine is distributed primarily in the lower two thirds of the state. It may be distinguished by the needles which occur in bundles of threes and are about 12 inches long.

The official state flag of Alabama is called the "crimson cross of St. Andrew's," a red cross on a white background. This flag was adopted in 1895, and was patterned from the Confederate Battle Flag.
