Rites of passage in American Society occur through the pressures of recreational drug and alcohol use, which then leads to addiction towards the "good feeling." Lacking culturally accepted "rites of passage" in American Society fuels the reality escapism that drugs and alcohol offer.

I can't say that this really worked as I have been through a couple of periods where I regularly abused alcohol (as escapism for other things that were happening) and it was very hard to break out of those periods.
