Aldol reaction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The aldol reaction is a powerful means of forming carbon-carbon bonds in organic chemistry. Discovered independently by Charles-Adolphe Wurtz and Alexander Porfyrevich Borodin in 1872, the reaction ...

In the presence of acid or base catalysts the aldol reaction is reversible, and the beta-hydroxy carbonyl products may revert to the initial aldehyde or ketone reactants. In the absence of such catalysts these aldol products are perfectly stable and isolable compounds.

Hemiacetals, Acetals and the Aldol Reaction (2/7/96) ... The next reaction (the aldol reaction) we'll look at is one which makes a carbon-carbon bond. Such reactions are important in many contexts. One example is the photosynthetic conversion of CO2 to glucose, C6H12O6.
