Alsike clover is used for hay, pasture, and soil improvement, and is preferred where wetter or acid soils are encountered. It is generally out produced by other clover species for particular uses. Note: alsike clover can be toxic to horses under some conditions.

Alsike clover was cultivated in Sweden as early as 1750 and was introduced into North America in about 1834. It became an important legume in the clover-timothy growth areas. It derives its name from the Alsike parish of Sweden.

Alsike clover is know to cause two syndromes, photosensitization and big liver syndrome. The original condition was described by Dr. Schofield, former Dean of the Ontario Veterinary College (1). Although the toxicity has been described for 70 years, the actual toxin is unknown.

It is unknown if the wet clover causes problems by contact or ingestion. The typical signs associated with alsike clover are gastrointestinal distress, including mild colic and diarrhea. Photodermatitis ("sunburn") is also possible, especially on the parts of the body that contact the wet grass (lower legs, mouth).

Q: I'd like to see more information on alsike clover sensitivity, especially in horses with large areas of white skin such as Paints, pintos, and Appaloosas. All the information I can find suggests that the only problem you will encounter is a severe sunburn on the white areas with sloughing of the damaged skin.
