The amanita genus are mycorrhizal and contains some of the most poisonous species of fungi in the world, ... Species: Amanita sp.; It has been suggested that this may be A. gemmata but this species is not known to occur in New Zealand. The other suggestion has been a washed out A. muscaria but I don't agree with this.

I find this Amanita in sand dunes near the coast of Lake Michigan, in Emmet County, MI. It is a very curious amanita, since it grows without any trees nearby and is apparently mycorrhizal with huckleberry bushes, which grow in abundance in the immediate vicinity.
