Example of AMI encoding ... AMI (Alternate Mark Inversion) is a synchronous clock encoding technique which uses bipolar pulses to represent logical 1 values. It is therefore a three level system. A logical 0 is represented by no symbol, and a logical 1 by pulses of alternating polarity.

The encoding rules follow those for AMI, except that a sequence of four consecutive 0's are encoding using a special "violation" bit. This bit has the same polarity as the last 1-bit which was sent using the AMI encoding rule.

AMI encoding causes the line to alternate between positive and negative pulses for successive 1's. The 0's code is no pulse at all. Thus, a data pattern of 11001011 would cause the following pattern on an AMI line: - +,-,0,0,+,0,-,+.

A multilevel binary encoding that complements the bipolar-AMI encoding: binary 1 is represented by a lack of pulse, and a binary 0 is represented by a positive or a negative pulse. The binary 0 pulses must alternate in polarity.

AMI stands for Alternate Mark Inversion. This means a logical one is transmitted as energy and a logical zero is not. This reduces the actual bandwidth with a factor 2. The Bipolar fact adds the benefit of no DC components and transformer coupling.

Although alternate-mark-inversion (AMI) encoding is well-suited for direct-conversion FM transmission, designers often overlook the technique. AMI, a three-phase, synchronous-encoding technique, uses bipolar pulses to represent logic ones and no signal to represent logic zeros ( Figure 1 ). ... AMI, a three-phase,
