The first one depicts a somewhat outdated version of the so-called alphabet of Egyptian hieroglyphs, a topic about which I have written more than once. The first symbol shown is said to be the equivalent of our letter “a,” which isn’t quite correct, since the ancient subjects of the pharaohs didn’t write vowels.
