France, occupied by Celtic tribes, was once known as Gaul. By the 2nd century BC Rome had gained control of much of the Mediterranean region. Under Julius Ceaser all of Gaul was conquered by Rome. Under the authority of Rome, Gaul became wealthy & was introduced to Christianity in the 1st century AD.
