Few handloaders ever bother to anneal their brass. The few that do are usually dyed-in-the-wool "gun cranks" (to use a rather archaic term from the 1940's), "crazy experimenters" or shooters who are involved in some form of competitive shooting.

As the cold work in a metal increases, the hardness of the material ... The lowering of the recrystallization temperature is a result of the internal energy stored in the metal's crystal lattice during the cold work process. This results in lattice with a higher interal energy than an anealled [non-cold worked] metal.

A primer for working with brass ... Anneal the area to be formed. Again, use the square to align the metal square to the pipe, then wrap the metal around the pipe using the palms of your hands. You may need to re-anneal a time or two. Check square ness often, as you check the diameter of the curve.

[Archive] Annealing brass? General ... To anneal brass, heat it to a dull red and allow it to cool. It doesn't matter if it is quenched or air cooled, the results are the same. Brass will work harden, and depending on the bend or draw involved, several annealings may be required.

There are many different methods to anneal brass. You can anneal by hand, or use a machine. It’s a good idea to mark your necks with a temperature-sensitive laquer or Tempil stick so you don’t overheat the cases (which can ruin them).
