The two most common types are anticlines and synclines. They can each range in size from small wrinkles to great arches and troughs whose dimensions must be measured in miles. Interestingly, when traced in their long dimensions, folds ultimately disappear or die out, similar to wrinkles in a rug.

Sorting such features into anticlines and synclines with monoscopic imagery is not as straightforward as with stereoscopic images, where you can see three-dimensional shape directly. The first clue is the pattern of highlight and shadow.

A syncline is a fold where the rock layers are warped downward (Figure 10l-4 and 10l-5). Both anticlines and synclines are the result of compressional stress.

The simplest types of folds include monoclines, anticlines, and synclines. A recumbent fold is a more complex type of fold where one limb of the fold passes the vertical. Faults form when the stress applied to rock does exceed its internal strength.
