Aquatint; This technique is so called because its finished prints often resemble watercolors or wash drawings. It is a favorite method of printmakers to achieve a wide range of tonal values. The technique consists of exposing the plate to acid through a layer (or sometimes succesive layers) of resin or sugar.

Corrections and alterations to an aquatint are much like those used for etchings: scraping and burnishing and rebiting. An aquatint plate is quite a bit more delicate than an etching plate and in inking and printing more care must be used in order not to harm the much more fragile surface of the plate.
