The squaring of the parabola is attributed to Archimedes of Syracuse, who first showed in an "elementary" way (using an intuitive notion of limit) that a parabolic segment has 2/3 the area of its circumscribed Archimedes Triangle (whose sides are the chord and the two extreme tangents).
