Once limited to yellow, mahogany red, blue, and purple, pansies now come in a full spectrum of colors from red, all shades of pink, lavender, mauve, orange, ... There are a few varieties that are herbaceous perennials, true pansies, not violas, that will continue to grow year after year. Lilac Frost is one such perennial.

Pansies are easy to grow from seed, but most people buy already started plants. Since these are cold loving perennials, plant them in the spring. A place that will have partially shade during a hot summer is good - even better if there will be full sun in spring.

Pansies are not actually a perennial, but quite often the seed from the pansy flower will reseed itself if the winter has not been to harsh on it. They are not supposed to be perennial, but quite often they are.
