The popular vision of medieval battles on open battlefields, complete with horses charging and banners flying were more the exception than the rule.

Attacking armies tried to take castles in stages. A common plan of attack involved first taking the gatehouse, then the castle's bailey, followed by its towers and the keep. Hand -to hand combat meant heavy losses would be suffered one both sides.

Castles were usually located on sites that could be easily defended, such as rocky crags, river bends, or islands. They had turrets (little towers on top of the castle walls) thick walls, battlements (and were located on sites that could easily be defended.
