Attending behavior is very important to effective interviewing. Attending involves the things we do which communicate to clients that we are listening and ready to respond. It carries the message that we are there with the client, that the client is important to us and deserves our attention.

Attending behavior, for all its seeming passivity, is a powerful skill. In one experiment, six college students were trained in attending behavior. Then a visiting lecturer, not known for his dynamic lecturing, was invited to class.

Good attending behavior demonstrates that you respect a person and are interested in what he/she has to say. The effect of attending is an encouragement to the person to go on talking about his/her ideas or feelings freely: without using words, you are communicating that you are listening to the person.

In addition, at least once during the week deliberately engage in non-attending behavior, note the other person's response, then re-engage with good attending skills. What do you observe?
