Spruce will bring out a full crisp sound that gets richer and better with age. Western Red Cedar tends to be very good right off with a big bass and more boxy sound. I love the Western Red Cedar for more of the "B Model" Autoharp sound.

Due to my constant whining about my autoharp I had, he went ahead and gave it to me early. I can't tell you how much I love the new harp. It is so light weight and the sound is just awesome. ... I am continually surprised by how much I enjoy this autoharp...the sound, the playability, the eight, the arrangements of the bars.

Only a few people can make the autoharp sound orchestral, and York, Maine musician Harvey Reid is at the top of that list. The autoharp is one of those instruments that is at once fascinating and annoying. In the 1950s and ‘60s, a lot of elementary school teachers had them in their classrooms.

Some autoharp players prefer the sound of strings that are plucked or strummed closer to the bottom slotted string bridge ( 42 ) and therefore make the decision to mount the chord retaining device ( 14 ) further away from the bridge to allow finger movement space over the lower portion of the autoharp.

The majority of autoharp performers sing as well as play, involving more than one microphone and possibly pickups and effects. While there is no substitute for the natural sound of an autoharp played in an area with good acoustics, amplification can be done that achieves a pleasant if not natural sound.
