Baby birds that are found on the ground, are already feathered, and are able to hop, but are not yet ready to fly, are called "fledglings". These young birds are sometimes mistaken for a bird with a broken wing. A bird with a broken wing will hold the injured wing lower than the good wing.

What should I do if I find a baby bird on the ground? I have seen two in our neighborhood recently that were in danger of being run over by a car or caught by a dog. Is there some group that takes care of homeless birds? ... The oft-stated belief that if you touch a baby bird its parents will abandon it has little substance.

I do draw the line, however, by giving students an early spring warning against collecting baby birds or mammals. On first sight, a baby bird on the ground throws otherwise hardened cynics into fits of compassion, and their overriding urge is to rescue the helpless creature from a cruel environment.
