But when I press AltGr + the backslash key, it does nothing. I've found that I have to press altgr + ")" (the key just after the "0" when you use figures keys above letters). When I type altgr + the backslash key on a text tty, it works correctly so I don't think it's a locales problem.

You can ONLY enter a backslash in the User name field. NO backslash is allowed in the Sign-In name field, therefore it will not appear anywhere on any symbol page using any font, Alt keys, etc. As per my IT department, Verizon, and RIM.
