I suppose this could be thought of as getting a suitable driver for the keyboard. Usually, american keyboards have the backslash as an ordinary character, somewhere around the "Enter" key, if I remember correctly.

anyone got any ideas. its a toshiba satallite , american model but being used in england. as i said before the backslash key is on the keyboard but types as somthing else. Thanks for any input Paul from London.

Isn't the american version easier for actually typing? It would be if it was an American keyboard but it isn't, ... It's a pain in the neck running a US keyboard on a UK layout because you lose one of the keys... the backslash(\) I think which especially hurts if you like to type in paths to places on your hard drive.

could it be that your keyboard is not trully Latin American layout? All of mines have the backslash on the right of the 0. Maybe is a variant of a spanish keyboard. A friend of mine has a US keyboard configure as Spanish (this is in XP by the way) and I can't never found where things are.
