Antimicrobial agents are chemicals that are used against bacteria. ... Figure 1. The illustration above shows zones of inhibition around filter paper disks saturated with anti-microbial compounds. The diameter of the zone of inhibition is a measure of the effectiveness of an anti-microbial compound (Rollins and Joseph, 2000).

Hi Dylan - Zones of inhibition are always measured in millimters, as the diameter of the full zone. By "full zone," I ... The easiest way to make the measurement is to first turn the plate over, so you're measuring against the plastic of the Petrie dish, and not placing the ruler directly on the agar suface + bacteria.

Zone of Inhibition Testing for Antimicrobial Activity ... Zone of Inhibition - Kirby-Bauer Test ... The method cannot be used to test the activity of antimicrobial agents against viruses, since viruses don't "grow" on agar plates like bacteria (viruses don't replicate outside of their host organisms).

One method of measuring the effectiveness of a chemical agent is to determine its zone of inhibition. In the agar diffusion method, one species of bacteria is uniformly swabbed onto a nutrient agar plate. ... How could you determine whether the bacteria in a zone of inhibition were killed or just inhibited?

Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and diameter of the zone of inhibition for oxytetracycline, ormetoprim-sulfadimethoxine, oxolinic acid, and florfenicol were determined for ... RESULTS: Susceptibility tests for oxytetracycline, ormetoprim-sulfadimethoxine, and oxolinic acid revealed 2 distinct populations of bacteria.
