Distillation Lab Question! Other Sciences discussion ... One of the questions asks to determine the theoretical yield using the balanced equation we had to come up with, but it also says keep in mind that only 12% of the sucrose will be converted to ethanol Does this 12% factor into anything!

The following question is due to a reaction in organic chemistry ethanol from sucrose. Use the coefficients in the balanced equation you supplied. ??mols sucrose x (4 mols CO2/1 mol sucrose) = xx mols CO2. Now you are ready for PV = nRT. You know P = 1 atm ; You solve for V (in liters, then convert that to milliliters).

Starch is a complex carbohydrate, and other carbohydrates can also be used - for example, in the lab sucrose (sugar) is normally used to produce ethanol. Industrially, this wouldn't make sense. It would be silly to refine sugar if all you were going to use it for was fermentation.
