In this lab you will study an inelastic collision using a Blackwood ballistic pendulum. The colliding bodies are a small metal ball, which is fired from a spring loaded gun, and a metal receptacle, or catcher. The receptacle is also the bob of a simple pendulum.

PHYS 231 Lab Exercise: Ballistic Pendulum; Objective: Today we will combine two physical concepts (conservation of energy and conservation of momentum) in order to allow you to predict where a projectile launched horizontally from your desktops will land.

Studying the Laws of Conservation of Momentum and Energy using a Ballistic Pendulum Theory: Conservation of Momentum: Momentum is the product of an objects mass and direction. Momentum is also a vector therefore 7. Determine the velocity for each range using the methods describe in the theory portion of the lab.

After grading all these lab reports, it was clear that a number of groups made the same mistakes. I tried to tell each group what went wrong in ... This comparison of kinetic energy before (derived from height of arm+ball pendulum) to after (measured from height of arm+ball pendulum) tests only your ability to do algebra.
