The difference between 3 1/2 and 3 7/8 over a 6 foot run is what one extra baluster? So I don't see the point about preferring to have a minimum of balusters being the result of the formula, unless of course where you are you can have a 12 inch space ... divide x by #of balusters, this is your baluster spacing; take your baluster spacing and subtract one ... If I did all that though I might have to use my brain (I dont always use 4 1/2 I kind of know what to use to not have to wide a gap at the end) But I think I will hang onto that formula and maybe use it next time.
