I am an old engineer but have built several floating barrel docks. The largest one has now lasted over 15 years with essentially no maintainence. The key, form my standpoint is sealing the barrels and supporting them.

Agree Mike PT with a minimum level of .40, they do make a higher grade for docks which I think is closer to .06 or so ... --trick is that once it's tied into the structure and living outdoor, it stays wet enough to hold its shape. so about the floating dock? --anyone have photos to post showing underside barrel details.

I am going to build some floating docks but before I re−invent the wheel I would like to get some opinions. They will be; 16' long by 3' wide and at either end I would put a plastic barrel under it, inside the frame.

2. Barrel and foam floating docks that rise and sink with the water levels are noisy as people move over them. So, if you like to fish off your dock the design might be an issue. 3. Floating docks are, I believe more expensive to build (if you're going to do it right) than fixed wood docks.
