This expedition resulted in the Battle of Marathon. During the two year interval he sent heralds to the Greek city-states. The heralds, as was the custom, asked for "earth and water" as a token of submission. Many of the Greek city-states acquiesced but many did not, including the two most important, Sparta and Athens.

Today is one possible date for the 490 B.C. Battle of Marathon (after which the Greek League was formed with Sparta in charge) which was an important moment for the victorious Athenians in the Persian War (492-449). In 477 the Athenians and their allies set up the Delian League.

Footnote: Phedippedes returned from Sparta, ran to Marathon, fought in the battle and then ran back to Athens carrying the news of victory before falling dead from exhaustion. It was in memory of his deed that the long distance race in the modern Olympic Games ( a mere 26 miles plus!) was named the Marathon.
